World War III nearly exterminated life on Earth, but using alien technology, the Church of the Resurrection built a new society from the ashes. They created enclave cities that were shielded from the harsh radiation poisoning the world. They created what was called Constructed Reality, persistent quantum worlds. To prevent more wars, the Church established the game called Primacy Online. It took place in a fantasy world so real that the players could not distinguish it from reality. All conflicts between the city-states that rose from the radioactive wastelands were settled inside the world of Primacy Online.Thirteen hundred years later, with the launch of Primacy Online VI: Legacy of Balor, World War IX begins. Players from Earth's city-states will be locked in cryogenic capsules and play Primacy Online in War Mode. Their death in game means their death in the real world. Their achievements in the game will determine the victory rankings of their city-states and reshuffle the balances of power between them.
I found flaws in the game mechanics of Primacy Online V and exploited them to rise to the peak of the game. I became a legend, but when the Church declared me a cheater, I was perma-banned from the game. Now, the Church intends to conscript me and all the other perma-banned cheaters to a special Church group for World War IX and use us for their purposes. However, Morgan Danan, Speaker of the City of Mann, and the generally acknowledged number one player of Primacy Online, has a deal for me. She offers me the chance to escape from under the Church's thumb. She will give me access to Primacy Online, and I will fight on behalf of her and the City of Mann.
I am dying. There is no choice for me. The only way for me to live more than a few years is to be cryogenically frozen and play Primacy Online. I will return to the only place I have ever felt alive. I will once more turn the game on its head as Crom Cruach.
