6 years ago, the world shut down, everyone went inside, watched the Tiger King, and paused life; I followed suit. The problem is when everything reopened and people began venturing outside again, I remained behind closed doors. In the vacuum, the silence and solitude became peace and the busy streets outside my windows became my nightmare. I turned to books. My writing took off and I've made living vicariously through the voices in my head a full-time job.
But I miss my family. I miss having friends. I miss sex. My therapist is insistent that I immerse myself in society, bravely venture out beyond my stoop, and experience life in real time.
Every week a I go a little further from home, until one day I pass the large front windows of a butcher shop and spot the tallest man I've ever seen in person. I can't look away, but I can't walk inside either. Little by little, with the not-so-gentle push from my therapist and my brother, I take a deep breath and cross the threshold.
Leave it to Cleaver isn't just a meat shop, it's where I'm going to reclaim my life one steak at a time.
And Boaz isn't just a butcher...he's mine.

Meat is all I've ever known. Beef, pork, chicken...irritating customers who talk on their phone at my counter. The family butcher shop has been around for over 100 years and it serves as the perfect cover for the extracurricular activities the men in my family pursue. So many bad people slip through the cracks of the judicial system, if they even see the inside of a courtroom or police precinct. The Wotjak men bring a special kind of justice to the victims and a peace of mind that their monsters will never harm them again.
My world is turned on its axis the moment she walks in. Big glasses, dark hair that hides her face, short stature, and soft voice. I'd like to think that my actions are noble, though definitely illegal, but I would have never considered myself worthy of a reward...but I can't think of her as anything other than a gift from karma herself. I must have done something right because every moment I spend with her is proof that I am on this earth for a reason.
