White knights don't charge into a person's life every day

They especially don't narrowly avoid killing you when doing it. But after he picked Elena Matthews off the ground and checked her for broken bones, Bill McDuff cheerily explained his services as Hilltown, Oklahoma's resident white knight: "I always work in minor emergencies. Major rescues must be scheduled for alternate Tuesdays, and I fight dragons by appointment only."

Like anyone worthy of shining armor, McDuff was also slightly magical and maddeningly gallant. But Elena, intent on her slow recovery from the effects of a high-powered career, didn't notice those hallmarks of a true white knight - nor the fact that he'd just begun his latest major rescue.
