It is August 1102, and Conn Fitz Malvais, a Breton Horse Warrior and knight, stands in the smoking ruins of the manor and village of Berwick Maviston. Around him lie dozens of bodieswomen, children, and men who tried to fight against the powerful Montgomery brothers. Even the livestock have been slaughtered and left to rot. ‘This is the harsh price of civil war,’ Conn growls, as he rubs his hands over his smoke-grimed face and continues his search for their comrade, Captain Fox, who may still be alive somewhere amidst the devastation.
This brutal civil war presents increasingly severe challenges for Malvais as the two enormous armies approach Shrewsbury. Robert de Belleme, the leader of the Montgomery family, is steadfast in his resolution to defeat and kill King Henry, The Usurper. Meanwhile, Malvais' foes, Abbot Columbanus and Robert de Courcy, are conspiring to murder Rohese, the woman he loves, whilst seeking to locate and kill their hidden child, Darius.
At the same time, his friends, Georgio, the rescued Horse Warrior, and Edvard of Silesia, Chatillon’s man, are recovering in the infirmary of Shrewsbury Abbey, trapped between the two armies. They have a protector in the fierce Irish mercenary, Daegal O’Brien. However, their sanctuary and peace of mind are on the brink of being shattered. Murder stalks the abbey cloisters, a substantial silver ransom goes missing, and secrets are unveiled that will incite fury and vengeance among them all.
