Dragon's Blood

(1989)
(The second book in the Pearl of the Orient series)
A novel by

As Michael Harrington, Irish desperado, approaches the coast of India, his death by hanging seems inevitable...

Only the luckiest of chances allows him to escape.

As he makes his way through a hostile landscape, Michael is alone and friendless in a strange land.

How will he survive, let alone thrive, to build a new life?

A meeting with a local man and his family marks the turning point.

When they take him in and offer his hospitality, Michael returns the favour by saving their lives.

And then, accompanied by the family's daughter, Malama, Michael sets off for a new life.

An exiled life. A life on the edges of polite European society. A life fraught with danger.

In time, that life takes Michael to Singapore, and from there to China, where he sees first-hand the horrors of the opium trade and experiences the political turmoil that is about to wreak havoc on that country.

And against this backdrop, Michael falls in love...

Michael knows that the opium trade is wrong. But in this world of kill or be killed, can he be a force for good?

And perhaps more urgently, can he win the hand of the heiress who has captured his heart?

As these matters are decided, political dissent spills over into open warfare and Michael becomes embroiled.

But whose side is he really on?

Will Michael Harrington survive the brutal warfare in China and escape the grisly fates of so many of his friends?

And if he does, which of his loved ones will be left by his side?

Because not all of Michael's enemies are who, or what, they seem...

Dragon's Blood is a fearless, epic, no holds barred account of 25 years of one man's unconventional life in the midst of bloodshed and terror.
