Not many clients ask for James Pryce by name. Though he calls himself a network security analyst, James spends his days in pursuit of cyber-terrorists - rogue hackers who target and exploit large corporations. But the Randall twins are old friends. They have a situation that needs to be dealt with quickly and quietly, and they insist James is the man for the job.

Their disenfranchised younger brother has disappeared, leaving behind a cryptic message that promises vengeance against them. Billy is a multimedia artist known for staging provocative Alternate Reality Games, but following the recent death of a close friend, he has turned his energies - it seems - to a game that's both more personal and much more dangerous. James is tasked with finding him before he can make good on his threats.

So James goes undercover into Billy's world - a group of programmers and artists working at the forefront of tech-heavy media - where he finds that he fits in alarmingly well and is soon seduced into joining a mysterious project that could prove the opportunity of his life. But as the pieces of Billy's puzzle begin to fall into place, James will have to choose between competing agendas, and figure out who is really pulling his strings. His life may hang in the balance.

Blending the lush prose of The Secret History with the acuity of Pattern Recognition, Michael Olson's provocative debut novel delivers an intricate series of interlocking mysteries, exploring our most primal obsessions in new and, perhaps, disquieting ways.
