The task given to Nikolai is simple: hunt down the individuals who betrayed Alexei's brother-in-law and bring them back to face justice. One catch: Nikolai has a tip: they have fled to Italy; he doesn't know the language or the first thing about how to navigate a country so different from his homeland, Russia.

Amelia arranges for Sofia, a distant cousin, to not only house him but also assist him in his endeavors. Besides being a mirror image of Amelia, Sofia has something about her that makes Nikoali far more concerned. She seems to be able to read him like a book, and when she figures out one of his deepest secrets, he is shocked at what she wants in return for his silence.

Nikolai is convinced that if she knew all of his sins, she wouldn't ask him what she has. Soon enough, though, he realizes Sofia is hiding plenty of her own sins, and in the darkness they share, an obsession is born. An obsession that has Nikolai questioning if the man he thought he would serve until his dying day actually cares about him, as he claims when Alexei refuses to release him from his oath of service.
