Child's Play

(2008)
A novel by

In her new novel, "Child's Play", Carmen Posadas pays her greatest homage to the masters of mystery with a brilliantly drawn portrait of childhood innocence and evil. Luisa Davila is an established Spanish mystery writer who decides that her detective's next case will involve the suspicious death of a child at an elite private day school. The idea occurs to her when her eleven-year-old daughter Elba is about to begin her academic year at just such a school; the same one, in fact, that Luisa had attended as an adolescent some forty years earlier. However, following the death of one of Elba's schoolmates, Luisa is troubled by memories of her own past and a childhood incident which strangely reflects both the fiction she is writing and reality itself. As her history gradually reveals this troubling symmetry, Luisa cannot rid herself of the feeling that somewhere within this closing circle of dire events lies an unspeakable horror, which the writing of her novel seems to have somehow anticipated, or even unleashed.
