'Refreshingly gentle and endearing, a lovely story' - BOOKLIST Fred Pennington's great grandfather was born in 1823 and by 1912 he had become completely blind. He lived with Fred's family on a farm on the west coast of Devon at Hartland. When Fred started school early in the first world-war, his job on coming home was to take him for a walk around the fields. The old man was able to recount events of the past in great detail, and this book is based upon the stories he told Fred during their walks. Born into a humble labourer's family, living for Fred's great grandfather had been a continuous struggle just to have enough to eat and, later, to bring up his family.
