Rope on Fire

(2016)
(The first book in the John Crane series)
A novel by

"Don't think of it as losing your license to kill. Think of it as gaining an unlimited black budget."John Crane is an elite secret agent... until his agency suddenly closes. But if the government doesn't want Crane's talents, Internet billionaire Josh Sulenski does. Someone's going to a lot of trouble to sabotage a harmless project he funds. Josh wants to know who and why.

When Crane investigates, he quickly turns up a lot more trouble than he bargained for. On his own and under attack from all sides, Crane makes up new rules for the spy game. His only assets: a talent for improvisation and Josh's very deep pockets.

From the beaches of Puerto Rico to the gritty alleys of Eastern Europe, Crane works his way back to the man pulling the strings - a ruthless gangster out for global power. With his back against the wall and innocent lives at stake, John Crane charges into a war he may not be able to win.

A Note from Mark Parragh -

If you've made it this far, you may be wondering what the John Crane series is all about. I created John Crane because it seemed to me that today's spy novels had lost the sense of fun I enjoyed in classic spy fiction. I'd had my fill of embittered anti-heroes working for corrupt government agencies and damaged by the things they'd seen and done. Sure, I enjoy dark and gritty stories too, but sometimes I just want to sit back and go on an adventure!

My goals with the Crane series are to update the cool, sexy style of classic spy stories for today's world and to write those stories with sincerity. The Crane books can be intense, but they're not grim, and they're not ironic. John Crane and his billionaire patron Josh are out to save the world and have a good time doing it. And even though Crane's just one man, he can make a difference.

This series means a lot to me, and I hope you'll want to join me in John Crane's world. To try a free book and keep pace with upcoming releases, I invite you to join my reading group. You can join us, and learn more about John Crane and my other books at my web site at markparragh.com.

Not since the likes of Ian Fleming and John D. MacDonald have I enjoyed a writer so much. I have only one suggestion... Please write more books. - Mark J Durst

Hard to believe this is Mark Parragh's first novel - a very polished work. The plot moves rapidly and smoothly; I loved the international flavor. - Avid Mystery Reader

Bravo on this author's first novel! Well written and engaging, I can't wait to read the next one. - Barry W

A great story line of foreign intrigue and action which kept my interest throughout. John Crane is molded out of the James Bond genre but a bit more dare devilish. Looking forward to reading subsequent adventures from this talented author. - Philip Kontrabecki
