Right place, wrong time
It's summer and Lucinda and Thea are visiting Eleanor Casings, a dear friend who has taken a small cottage, conveniently located near Radcliffe Hall, Thea’s childhood home, where they will be staying.
To Lucinda’s dismay, they are not the only guests. Mr. Huntley Clarke is also there at Lord Radcliffe’s invitation. After their recent encounter in town, Lucinda had hoped they would never meet again. Just as well the grounds at Radcliffe Hall are extensive.
If that isn’t enough to avoid him, soon Lucinda and Thea find something else to keep them busy and out of Mr. Huntley Clarke’s way. Their friend, Eleanor Casings, is under suspicion of assault with the intention of murder.
While Lucinda and Thea supplement their modest incomes by donning their sleuthing caps and offering their discreet services to catch store thieves, expose light-fingered guests, and resolve blackmail threats, this might prove to be above their abilities, but if they fail to help their friend, she could well end up in prison.
