A 40-YEAR-OLD TIME BOMB IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE

When SAM TILSON finds himself invalided out of the British Special Boat Service for suddenly developing Type 1 diabetes, following his discharge his CO manages to secure work for him at MI5. Tilson is thrilled by this. He gets to stay in a shadowy world even if he is no longer on active service.

However, on arrival at Thames House, he finds himself led to a dark corner of the building where The Office of Inconclusive Covert Enquiries (ICE) is based. Under the sharp wit and keen eye of ANNE BARNARD, this is a forgotten corner of the Security Services; it’s a backwater charged with looking through past files for anything that may have been missed the first time.

Tilson is not impressed with his new digs thinking it to be lowly working in records! He asks his fellow ICER operatives – CAMILLE DASOUZA, EBONY FADIPE and GARETH HARRINGTON – how he might go about leaving. Already a closed book to him, this desire to leave makes him no friends.

But then, out of the blue, Tilson is given a mission, albeit a seemingly straightforward one. All he needs to do is fly to Oslo, travel to Telemark and retrieve the diaries of a retired diplomat who recently died.

It’s not dealing with a global crisis, but it beats the hell out of being stuck in the fustiest, dustiest corner of Thames House. He readily accepts.

However, what starts off as the simplest of assignments becomes a deadly game of cat and mice across the frozen winter landscape of Norway.

Chased by the Norwegian Police, the Russian Military Intelligence GRU and MI6, Tilson will need all his special forces training to survive this.

And then he has to work out why, but in so doing will he bring his own Service to its knees?
