At the beginning f the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln asked Robert E. Lee to lead the Union army. But Lee refused. He was from Virginia, part of the Confederate South. He would not fight with the Union against his home state. Instead, he became a commander in the Confederate army. This is his story.
