Romance - Charita Atwood was raised mostly in Japan with her scholarly father. Upon his death, a family friend, Brad Livingston, shows up and helps Charita organize her father's affairs. Brad also decides to marry Charita and moves forward with these plans despite her misgivings. Charita, barely out of high school, is soon overwhelmed by her new life and Brad's problems with his family and business. Brad's emotionally possessive step-sister, Jacinda, is a lawyer and her marriage to another lawyer is on the rocks. There is also Brad's Japanese secretary, Pearl, who everyone knows is also Brad's mistress. There are constant threats to Brad's business - and to Brad and Charita - by others who want to steal his jewelry-making techniques.
