In the middle of the night, eleven-year-old Josiah Hutchinson hears the howling wolves. They sound lonely, and as the Salem Village residents set cruel traps to kill them, Josiah wonders if there is a better plan to keep them away. But there's no time to think one up as Josiah's Aunt Esther and Cousin Rebecca come to live with the Hutchinsons. His sister, Hope, is enraged to be stuck with loud overweight Rebecca. Hope rebels and begins a friendship forbidden by her parents. Rebecca admires Josiah, and she follows him like a shadow everywhere. Josiah, Hope, and their friends in the village finally devise a dangerous plan to thwart the wolves, and Rebecca tags along. Can Josiah and Hope protect her? Will their daring idea end in disaster?
