Death comes for the world's children.

This is not a story for the fragile.

"Fryer Pinscott purchased the mortuary twenty years earlier, and as it happened, he soon buried the previous owner. He had also incinerated his parents' bodies and spread their ashes on the appropriate ground. His name was the subject of obvious teasing, but cremation jokes were just noise. This was a man who understood what was important in the world. Ceremony mattered. Decorum and a sturdy back had to be ready to bear any casket. Good words needed to be stated at the right moment, with the perfect inflection: Words ancient before there was a Christian God or the modern, indifferently drawn images of Heaven. The good funeral director was the pillar standing among the shattered, and with all of that experience at the ready, Fryer quietly made himself a part of the Carson-Able clan."

Best known for the Great Ship series, Robert Reed has published many stories over his long career, plus several well-received novels.
