Life as a new employee of the Office is proving anything but simple for Sergei Valov.
There is still a traitor somewhere inside the Office, and his Captain trusts almost no one, Sergei included. Another Captain seems perfectly willing to use him in his own games. Sergei will have to figure out who is playing whom, choose his allies carefully, and make sure he doesn’t become a pawn in someone else’s plans.
Meanwhile, Tainograd is growing more dangerous.
The city’s factions continue their struggle for influence, each pursuing its own agenda. The Church of Purity is gaining attention by blaming the gifted for the country’s troubles, while the Church of Wisdom is preparing an answer of its own. And for reasons Sergei has yet to fully appreciate, he is about to be drawn into that struggle.
As if that weren’t enough, another expedition beyond the Edge awaits.
It should be just another mission.
Unfortunately, Sergei’s missions have a habit of going completely wrong.
