BY A DARK CANAL – She finally took notice of his efforts and pushed him away as easily as though he were a child. And the next moment, fetched him a crack with her slim knuckles that sent him spinning across the room and slamming into a wall again, all the breath knocked out of him.
UNDER THE ICE – His skin was more than simply pale. It was utterly white, almost transparent, like the ice through which he had emerged. And his eyes were milky. He looked blind. But the way that he’d homed in on her? The way that his pupils were directed straight down at her face? He could somehow see perfectly well. His features were twisted up with rage.
THE NIGHT MANAGER – But then the rest of her came into sight, her hair, her head, her face. And her beautiful features had been so severely mangled up – gouged and mauled and slashed at – that he could not even recognize them, they barely resembled human features any longer. More like those you might expect to find on some lengthily interred corpse.
