Murder in Lancashire

(1988)
A novel by

A horrific collection of murder cases from Lancashire, ranging from a multiple rape and death from exposure at Hollinwood in 1830 to a homosexual stabbing at Charnock Richard in 1984, by way of shooting, throat-slitting, garotting, strangling, bludgeoning and poisoning. In all, this new anthology reveals fourteen true cases of grim murder which have taken place in the Red Rose county over the past 100 years. The author explores the darker side of human nature, concentrating on less well-known murder cases. He investigates the struggle with poverty, unhappiness and madness that can lead to murder through his acccounts of the Darwen Child Murder and the case of John Smith who for thirteen years harboured a grudge against the judge who sent him to Borstal. Every killing is presented in a way which grips the reader's attention, focusing on the endless versatility, ingenuity - and sometimes downright stupidity - of those who commit murder.
