The strapline of ‘gripping’ is spot on, and each time I put the book down, I couldn’t wait to get back to it.

Of its type (i.e., an easy read, not great literature, and so on), it’s first rate, and stands out amongst a very large crowd. I can often second-guess where plots are leading, and although I had an inkling of how some characters might develop, the actual narrative left me guessing up until the end, and Tori de Clare certainly knows how to draw the reader in. Characterisation was good, often excellent, not least Naomi and her immediate circle. Oddly enough, Nathan was perhaps the least finely drawn, but perhaps that’s intentionally part of his mystery. De Clare knows how to create atmosphere, pace drama, and describe environments with clear and precise prose. The music-related background is totally accurate, underlining the challenges that immensely talented trainee musicians face in world-class music colleges (in this case, the real-life and, indeed, world-class, Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester). I then discovered that de Clare is herself a professional musician.

I’ll definitely read the next book in the series.
