Fran Smith lives in the quiet countryside near Cambridge, England where spends her time researching colourful ways of murdering Edwardians.
She turned to crime writing with the invention of young woman detective Vita Carew. A Thin Sharp Blade, set in 1903, was based on a newspaper cutting about the mysterious death of a boxer. It was shortlisted for a Debut Dagger by the Crime Writer's Association in 2019. The prequel, Poison at Pemberton Hall, published in Autumn 2020 also features young Vita as she is confronted with a mass poisoning at a glamorous country house dinner.
A Winter story, Dr Potter's Private Practice, will be published in September 2021.Fran originally wrote Best Wishes, Sister B, the comic struggles of a modern convent in the Fens, to entertain her husband as he recovered from a stroke. It started as a series of letters written on crowded commuter trains in the early morning and posted home to encourage him to walk as far as the front door mat. The Power of Cake, a sequel came a little later.
