Part of the Highland Mysteries series, which can be read in any order. Each case Joana and Brian take on stands on its own.
Life On Scotland's Canals Moves Slowly. Death Doesn't.
Joana is a travel photographer who investigates things when she really ought not to. Often enough, she has received one of DCI Fraser's lectures about obstructing police business. This time, though, it is Fraser who needs keeping out of trouble. He has managed to get himself accused of murdering a boater on the Forth & Clyde Canal.
As if things weren't tricky enough, Joana has to share a narrowboat with Brian, her so-called sidekick, who has the rare talent of being both essential and profoundly annoying before they have even untied the ropes. And their boatmate, a giant tabby, clearly believes she owns the boat, including the crew.
As they dig deeper, some peculiar bits of Fraser's past come to light. Brian would not be surprised if Scotland's grumpiest DCI had irritated someone enough to get himself framed. Their investigation takes them from misty towpaths to Stirling's old town, and from a clandestine meeting beneath the Kelpies to unexpected trouble at the Falkirk Wheel.
Joana and Brian are forced into a race with the police to clear Fraser's name. Unfortunately, the race is happening at four miles an hour on a canal, with Brian at the tiller. The odds are not promising.
Watery Suspicions is as much comedy as cosy crime, with a sleuthing pair who don't take themselves too seriously. A proper murder-mystery whodunit with a fast, page-turning plot and the kind of dry British humour that can bite. And, as ever, Scotland steals the show.
Perfect for fans of Midsomer Murders and Agatha Raisin.
Genre: Cozy Mystery
