The title refers to the conflict happening in the background of this story, as the Lyrian 4th and 7th Fleets have moved to punish the Sontee for the things they have been doing over the last five books. In this volume, you will see the titanic clash of the military might of the Imperial Lyrian Navy against the Moon ships of the Sontee.
Meanwhile, the story continues with more revelations shared by Tyrenkov concerning the nature of their adversaries, and their new operational plans. Unable to prevail over Earthforce in set battles, the Khel decide they do not need to defeat Earthforce in open battle; they need to only create uncertainty, to punish curiosity, slowly interdict commercial traffic to these unexplored stars, and to force Earthforce to fear the unknown.
The big battles against the Khel in space taper off, but fighting against the Kroth and Dharmans on Planet Archon will occupy the cast, and Karpov puts his new flagship,
Orion, through its paces probing into the Khel Web. Then events take a darker turn when the Khel launch an operation to attempt the assassination of Vladimir Karpov.
Old one time enemies appear and become new Allies, and Elena Chandros returns to pursue a bio-weapon that can be used against the Khel. A special operation is conceived by Tyrenkov to deploy that weapon. Then a rescue operation is mounted to render assistance to CSS
Opal Star, a commercial mining ship, and Fedorov learns that the Khel have come to Planet Vulkanis in the 40 Eridani system, looking for the hidden knowledge of the ancient Vulkans. To forestall that, Orion goes to Vulkanis to try and find the fabled Halls of Thalan before the Khel do, and protect the ancient library, which has hidden its knowledge in a very clever way. Yet his eagerness to find the ancient records find him summoned to Eridia to stand before the Lyrians. There he asks his burning question as to the origins and intentions of the Lyrian Empire.
