When Mark Belmont brings his young wife, Kate, to Belltower in the summer of 1858, he is determined that he shall be named as his grandfather's heir. Kate soon begins to doubt her husband's seeming sincerity and finds herself caught up in a maze of deceit. Bewildered, she turns unwillingly to Dr. Philip Tarrant, but he appears to be Mark's enemy and his rival for the inheritance. Only when she is forced to flee from Belltower does Kate discover the reasons behind Mark's actions and the wayward behaviour of her own heart.
