I thought this vacation would involve three simple pleasures: fresh mountain air, plenty of naps, and possibly a close encounter with Firmin, the legendary fish of Mirror Lake.
Instead, I got murder.
Actually, make that two murders.
When Odelia, Chase, Grace and the rest of us leave Hampton Cove for a peaceful break in the woods, I’m prepared for the occasional hike, the occasional missed meal, and the occasional indignity of being expected to behave like an outdoorsy cat. What I’m not prepared for is a hot dog vendor turning up dead, a mushroom forager meeting a very suspicious end, and a mysterious motorcycle man who seems to be everywhere he shouldn’t be.
And that’s before Odelia is rushed to the hospital, leaving Dooley, Harriet, Brutus and me in the care of a very nice local family with four very familiar cats.
And when I say familiar, I mean familiar.
Their cats look exactly like us. Their town looks suspiciously like Hampton Cove. Their police chief, librarian, doctor, mayor and resident troublemakers all seem to have stepped out of some strange parallel universe where everything is almost the same only not quite.
Soon we’re tangled up in a mystery involving a stolen deed, a controversial golf resort, a legendary fish, a grieving dog owner, a very dramatic cat choir performance, and a killer on a motorcycle who may be working for someone with a great deal to hide.
So much for a relaxing vacation.
Now it’s up to me, Max, big-boned blorange detective extraordinaire, to figure out who is behind the murders before this charming little town loses its woods, its secrets, and possibly a few more of its residents.
Good thing I brought my brain.
From the long-running Mysteries of Max series.
Each book contains a complete standalone mystery.
Genre: Cozy Mystery
