His Trick, Your Treat

(2026)
(The sixth book in the Dark Holiday series)
A novel by

He's left gifts on my porch the past few Halloweens.

A pumpkin. A cord of firewood. A jar of honey, because he knew how I take my tea. I never saw his face. I told myself it was nothing and I locked my good deadbolts and slept just fine.

Pretty, isn't it. A man who leaves you sweet things in the dark.

This year he stopped waiting for Halloween.

A candy apple on the step. A card that said SIX DAYS. And then a man in a jack-o'-lantern mask standing in my bedroom doorway while I had my hand between my legs, telling me to keep going. I should've screamed. I should've run.

I told him not to stop.

I take 911 calls for a living. All night, every night, I tell women to lock the door and wait for the car. I know better than anyone alive what you're supposed to do about a man who gets into your house uninvited.

The next night, I left the door unlocked on purpose.

Here's what I didn't know. There are two men in my woods this fall. One leaves gifts where I'll find them. The other leaves dead things in my door, calls my line to tell me he's watching, and keeps a pry bar in his truck. One of them cut a key to my house a couple years ago and never told me.

The other one is counting down to the night he takes what's left of me.

And when it finally comes for me in the dark, the monster I let into my bed is the only thing standing between me and the one who was always going to kill me.

Trick or treat, he said.

He already knew I'd pick him.
