Of all Nelson's captains William Hoste was his favourite pupil and was closer to Nelson than any other. In the turmoil of the Battle of St Vincent, Hoste first glimpsed a flaw in his idol and it was not until the Battle of Lissa that he dispelled his disillusionment and regained his true self.
