Pepita

(1937)
A non fiction book by

PEPITA was the name of the famous Spanish dancer who was V. Sackville-West's grandmother. This book is the story of that dancer, of her daughter and of her granddaughter, who is its author. PEPITA is as remarkable a book as its namesake was a person. Brilliantly written, it is completely without reticences. It describes the illicit menage of the Hon. Sackville-West, later to become minister to the United States and later still Lord Sackville, with the enchanting but already married and never over-faithful Spanish dancer; the career of their daughter, Victoria, in school, as her father's hostess in Washington, feted and popular; as the wife of her cousin, the third Baron Sackville, living a life that could be matched only in the wildest realms of fantasy; the childhood of her daughter, the author. It brings the tale of Pepita and her descendants down to the present day, a family history no novelist could have dared attempt as a work of fiction. There are few writers living possessed of a finer style than V. Sackville-West, and this memoir, written with affec tion, with understanding and truth, she has made her most memorable book, glowing with the color and strong emotion of such great novels as The Edwardians and All Passion Spent, she has made so rich in human interest, so absorbing that no reader, once embarked on the careers of the enchanted Spanish dancer and of her English Lord, is likely either to set the book down or to forget the romantic excursions few other families could ever have matched.
