All ten-year-old twins Alfie and Benji Petersheim want for Christmas is a room of their own. Their house is too crowded, and Alfie and Benji are sleeping on an air mattress in the fruit cellar, and boy, are they annoyed! Now Alfie has a plan to get them a real bedroom before Christmas.
After a two-year absence, Jerry Zimmerman returns from doing missionary work exhausted and disillusioned. Two years ago, Jerry promised Mary Yutzy that he would come back and marry her, but when he returns right before Christmas, Mary barely recognizes the man she fell in love with four years ago. Jerry no longer wants to get married or bring children into such a horrible world.
Heartbroken, Mary enlists Alfie and Benji's help. The twins have a way of solving problems by making everything worse, but Mary is desperate, and doesn’t know what else to do.
