Once upon a time there lived a man who never fit in...

Richard Parker-Harris' cynical outlook on life is the result of being shuttled back and forth between his bitterly divorced parents. By the time he was old enough to shave, Richard had developed a knack for knowing when to make himself scarce. Before he could be sent away. Again.

When he lands on his grandmother's New York City doorstep after eight years in England, flat broke, hungover and reeling from a broken engagement, he realizes that his disappearing act is becoming a pattern, one he's determined to break.

Hopefully, before Susan Cade, his stepsister Meredith's cousin, breaks his nose. Again. But events seem to be headed in that direction when Meredith invites him to Cicada Ranch, the horse farm she and Susan own near Santa Barbara, California, and he fails to recognize Susan.

The ugly duckling Richard remembers has turned into a swan. A gorgeous redhead with an uncanny ability to pick winners at the racetrack. Richard needs money, and Susan owes him for breaking his nose. If only he can keep his hands off her, and overcome his suspicion that Susan's touch can soothe away the empty ache he feels inside.

Susan is an equine veterinarian. And she is hopelessly in love with Richard. Her telepathy enables her to talk to horses and to feel their pain. She can also feel the pain of the wounded child who cannot cry trapped inside of Richard, along with his hidden, long-suppressed gift.

When he discovers Susan's feelings for him, Richard the scoundrel -- the wastrel, the real ugly duckling -- vows for once to do the right thing and get out of her life forever. Before he hurts her. Again.

But love has other plans.
