(1997)
(A book in the That's My Baby! series)
A novel by

Wyoming rancher Tyler Barnett is at his wit's end. Since his ex-wife's death several months ago, his once happy-go-lucky six-year-old tomboy Amanda has not spoken a word and gets frantic when he suggests she might want to wear jeans and play outside the way she used to before her mother took her off to Chicago and dressed her frills and ruffles and ribbons and bows. His daughter mumbled once in her sleep, so he knows she is able to speak, but when she tries, nothing happens. He's tried everything, every expert he can find. Then, as he leaves the office of yet another specialist, this one in San Francisco, he hears a miracle. He hears his daughter's laughter. He rushes to her side, but she still can't speak. But he believes that the woman next to her is the key to Amanda getting her voice back.

Carley Baker is shocked by the obscene amount of money this little girl's father offers to her if she'll go to Wyoming and work with Amanda. But Carly's not a doctor, merely a volunteer at the clinic. She's not qualified, she tells him. But Tyler doesn't care. He believes Carly Baker is Amanda's only chance at a normal life. So he offers her even more money. Now she knows he's crazy! But he's not. He's a desperate father trying to help his child. When Carly's financial situation unravels, she finds herself taking the biggest gamble of her life and accepts his offer. The next thing she knows, she's on a plane with this stranger and his daughter, and on her way to Wyoming to start an unbelievable knew life. Even if it is only temporary. Just until Amanda can speak again.
