SOUTH AFRICA : One of the later additions to Trollope's 'colonial volumes', this book (published in two volumes) continues to demonstrate his great interest in geographical and local detail, seen always through the perceptive eye of the experienced traveller. South Africa originally appeared in 1877 and had gone through four editions in 1878 some indication of the interest which it aroused. VOLUME I contains a general introduction to the history, population and government of South Africa at this decisive point in its development. This is followed by sections on the Cape Colony and Natal. From Cape Town to Grahamstown, from Legislature to the Zulus, Trollope's account is a goldmine of detailed observation. VOLUME II covers the Transvaal, Grigualand West, the Orange Free State, native territories, and ends with a chapter of general conclusions. Whether recounting local history of describing diamond fields, considering the railway network or debating politics, the energy of this remarkable survey is unflagging.

Anyone interested in South African history, the Anglo Zulu War and the Boer War would find these volumes interesting reading, along with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's book on "The Great Boer War".
