On a windy, rain-drenched night a successful executive rescues a lady whose car has broken down - to find himself on the run for murder...

A middle-aged bon viveur discovers that he's been out-manoeuvred in the game of seduction...

A retired sailor decides to take his wife on an adventurous nautical journey rediscovering old haunts - only to face a challenging and dangerous turn of events...

A powerful City trader finds that a bad day turns into something a whole lot worse; and a chance encounter on an afternoon stroll leads to love - and a mysterious disappearance ...

These are just some of the stories in this wide-ranging collection from the creator of the classic naval adventures Two Hours to Darkness and Kleber's Convoy: there are sea stories, there are tales set in the South Africa he knows so well, stories of war, and others about the strange quirks of the everyday - from London to the English countryside.

Reflecting the lifetime's experience of an accomplished storyteller, The Road to the River is a powerful combination of drama, mystery, near-farce - and the truly unexpected. Sometimes haunting, often poignant, the depth of these stories will resonate with the reader long after they have been read.

The Antonov Project:
'Absolutely first class' New York Times

Antony Trew has had three careers: sailor, corporate executive and writer. The first was the sea: returning to it during the Second World War, he served with the South African and Royal Navies in the South Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Western Approaches, where he commanded the escort destroyer HMS Walker, principally employed on Russian convoys. He was awarded the DSC.
After the war he resumed his work with the Automobile Association of South Africa, of which he was Director General, and in his spare time wrote Two Hours to Darkness. Published in 1963, it was an immediate bestseller - over 3,500,000 copies printed in sixteen languages. On the strength of that he retired early and embarked on a third and highly successful career as a writer. His more recent titles have been Bannister's Chart, Yashimoto's Last Dive and The Chalk Circle. He now lives in Weybridge, Surrey.
