The Dowager Duchess of Rettendon has decided it’s time for her son to settle down. She knows he’s always loved the widowed Pearl, Lady Graveley, so she invites her and her daughters to the duke’s estate for Christmas. She’s determined there will be a proposal before Twelfth Night.
Victor, the Duke of Rettendon, decided long ago he’d never marry, probably right about the time his best friend married Pearl, the woman Victor loved. He plans for his cousin to inherit the dukedom, no matter what his mother wishes. He could never marry a woman he didn’t love, and he’ll only ever love Pearl.
Pearl has adjusted to widowhood in the eleven months since her husband died unexpectedly. Her daughters seem happy, and the invitation from Lady Rettendon seems the perfect way to spend the first Christmas without her children’s father there. She just hopes seeing Victor won’t stir up too many memories of Percy. What she’s not ready for is the passion and love that Victor awakens. Can she remain true to Percy as she always promised?
