I thought the worst part of killing Orenthiel was watching someone I cared about die, but I was wrong...

Turns out, his death didn't end the problem. It postponed it. Now infants are disappearing all over the world. Babies who need bottles and naps are slipping past ancient wards, vanishing from locked nurseries, and turning up in places they shouldn't be able to reach.

And no one's less surprised than I am that my four-month-old triplets seem connected to every impossible thing that's happening.

They react to symbols they've never seen. They recognize people they've never met. They stare into empty corners as though someone is standing there speaking to them. Most of the time they're exactly what they should be—messy, adorable, sleep-depriving little chaos goblins. Then they do something that makes every hair on the back of my neck stand up.

The silver-eyed woman I've been seeing at the edge of the woods finally steps out of the shadows with a warning. According to her, the true cost of the night Orenthiel died is only now coming due, and whatever he sacrificed himself to stop has started moving again.

The problem is that the people trying to prevent the disaster aren't making my life any easier. The Burners have returned, and they're gathering the missing children, protecting them, and preparing for something they believe is coming. Something they insist will destroy every gifted child born after Orenthiel's death.

Their solution, however, requires sacrifices I'm not willing to make.

Now I'm chasing clues left behind by a dead man, deciphering warnings from a woman who has spent decades guarding secrets, and trying to keep three increasingly unusual babies safe while the magical world argues over what should be done with them.

I've spent years believing that if I fought hard enough, planned carefully enough, and sacrificed enough of myself, I could protect the people I love.

This time, I may have to face a truth I don't want to accept. No parent can protect their children from everything. And if I can't figure out what Orenthiel was trying to save us from before the final seal fails, the price won't just be my family. It will be reality itself.
