'Why do I always dream of death?' asks Dr Lorenz. A Czechoslovakian doctor with a yellow star on his striped prisoner's rags is trying out his studies in psychotherapy and earnestly seeks a Freudian answer for him. This is an Auschwitz not at once recognisable. Fifty years later in London, legatees of the Holocaust are about to enter a baroque Freudian masquerade with backdrops by Munch and music by Mahler.
