Markhat takes on the case of Carris Lethway, who vanishes two weeks before his wedding. Markhat initially suspects cold feet and a hasty stagecoach ride to the south, but the deeper he digs, the less likely that appears. Will wedding bells turn to a funeral dirge, before any vows are even exchanged? As the search leads Markhat back to the years of the War, he uncovers a buried crime, and a sinister figure bent on vengeance. When magic enters the mix, both Markhat and Darla, his newfound love, find themselves racing to save Carris before they too fall victim to a madman's rage.
