Lady Meriel is a virtual prisoner of her unscrupulous guardian Lord Sedbury, who will not allow her to marry while he has control of her fortune and birthright of Wychaven. But Sedbury is manoeuvred, quite unintentionally, by Sir Rolf of Blackleigh.
Sir Rolf has given his allegiance to King Henry but he is also the friend of Prince Richard, who is heir to the throne and the champion of his mother's cause. Trusted by both the King and Queen he is a peace emissary. On Rolf's first encounter with Meriel he mistakenly believes she is a minstrel and draws her into the service of Queen Eleanor as a spy. His plan backfires when King Henry organises his marriage to Lady Meriel of Wychaven.Caught in a web of deceit Meriel has no reason to trust Blackleigh and believes that her husband must be worthy of Wychaven and not Wychaven of him.
