Oregon private eye Zachariah Smith only shows up at the protest rally at a local doctor's office because his sister is there and he wants to be nearby in case trouble breaks out. Trouble does break out, but not the kind he expected: a sniper fires a single shot, hitting Zachariah and also the doctor, who dies on the scene. The Chief of Police stops by Zachariah's hospital bed with an unsettling question: Which one of them was the intended victim?
