A young girl is abducted from a religious cult and held captive in an isolated English cottage in the Fens for "deprogramming". Her parents aren't worried. They arranged the kidnapping. Brut her grandfather doesn't trust the unorthodox experts who differ in temperament and openly disagree about the methods to be employed in the cleansing of their ward's mind.
Caroline Moore had left home to join a so-called religious community known as Eventide Joy, which claimed to minister to the aged. On closer examination, however, it appeared Eventide Joy had a greater interest in diverting old people's money into the sect's pocket than it had in directing any senior souls to heaven.
Enter Samson, the corpulent detective obsessed with clocks and the concept of time, who is hired by Caroline's grandfather to find the brainwashed beauty and her deprogrammers. In the midst of his search, an ordinary, though ugly, crime is committed - and an extraordinary one planned. A seemingly helpless victim, Caroline displays a talent for cunning and ruthlessness when matters come to crisis.
