Now free, he is determined to exact revenge for the humiliation that he suffered at the hands of his captors. Just as he is beginning his search, the body of a woman named Maxine Easterbrook, most likely one of Phelan's tormentors, is discovered not far from where Phelan awoke, and Paul is the main suspect.
To protect himself, Phelan is forced to swallow his pride and hire a private detective, the quirky and rather large John Samson. Soon Samson and Phelan are in the midst of a desperate race against time to solve the two mysteries in order to save Paul form both the police and the overzealous animal rights activists.
