A wireless receiver that should have no counterpart anywhere on Anyar clicks out a sequence of numbers. Someone, or something, is saying hello.
It is not as if the man who was Joe Colsco, and is now Yozef Kolsko, needs another complication. Six months is all the time he has to prepare himself, Caedellium, and scattered realms for a conflagration to determine histories that will reverberate worldwide. An alliance has been forged and the oaths sworn. Existing armies must be mustered, defenses constructed, and peoples prepared. In addition, a new army, armed with weapons novel to Anyar, must be raised, trained, and shipped across the sea to Landolin. There, they will join together against Narthon's drive to subjugate the entire continent. The fires of the furnace are being lit.
Yozef never wanted command. Now he must hold together Landolin kingdoms, Iraquinik kahsaks, troops and ships from far-off Fuomon, and a Caedellium society and economy straining under the weight of war, all the while knowing that decisions he makes will be paid for in blood.
On Landolin, the enemy is gathering its forces. The first elements of the largest expeditionary army in Narthon's history are in place with more to follow. In alliance with the Jahmnor kingdom, they will aim at their first intended victim, the Landolin kingdom of Munjor.
In the halls of the Assessor Corps, the brotherhood that has advised Narthon for centuries is beginning to confront existential questions about its foundations and about the origin of humans on Anyar.
Elsewhere, two inhuman minds have been watching Anyar. One was left by the Creators who cast Yozef Kolsko and four other Americans on Anyar. The other mind is an Echo of an ancient intelligence, millions of years into a mission begun by a long-vanished race. The two minds’ interests in humankind are not the same, and their knowledge of each other is limited in one case and nonexistent in the other.
Human and inhuman, chosen and imposed, all the threads are converging. Some questions will be answered. Some truths will be revealed. And nothing that enters the furnace will come out unchanged.
The Melding Furnace is Book 10 of the Destiny’s Crucible series. Two other works connect to the series but are not necessary reading. The companion novella Yodrill's Razor is relevant to the series beginning with this book, and the novel Harbinger is a parallel story of humanity’s first contact with alien sentience.
