Casey Pascoe had followed two men all the way from New Mexico toward Russellville, Arkansas. When those two men cut north at Goodnight, Texas, Casey couldn’t figure why they weren’t still headed for Arkansas. Weeks later in Cheyenne, Sheriff Coleman was surprised to learn Casey was a bounty hunter from New Mexico, sent after these men by Sheriff Daskalas of Albuquerque.
“Why in the world would any sheriff send a kid after two robber killers?”
Casey looked at him. “Cause he knew I’d get um. If you’ll hold um overnight, I’ll get what’s left of this money over to Wells Fargo an’ pick them two up in the morning. Right now, I’ve gotta send ah telegram to Albuquerque. Been gone over ah whole month.”
“Why’s that?”
“So Gus an’ my folks’ll know I got um at last an’s still alive an’ headed home. Got two in Santa Rosa Gus’ll have to send for.”
“They’ll be here and fed. Taking um back by horse er train?”
“Train. I’ve been in the saddle for well over ah month. I have to wire home and let my brother know I got um. One of um shot him right off. He’s okay.”
