In January of 1796, the richest convoy to leave Bombay in a twelvemonth sails early, by a track nobody watches, with a single frigate to guard it. Her course has already been sold.
Captain Nicholas Cruwys knows it. He is the bait. Eighteen months in the East have made him the most celebrated captain east of the Cape, and taught him that the French cruisers which take the Company’s ships are never where chance alone would put them; in a Bombay lane a young midshipman died beside him for what he had learned. Now, with the Company’s silver for the lure and Topaze alone in plain sight, Nicholas and the men who sent him mean to make the enemy show his hand.
It is a long way home. Across the Indian Ocean, round the Cape and up the length of the Atlantic to a winter anchorage at Spithead, Nicholas must fight the King’s war and bring his ship and his people through it, knowing that whatever he learns at sea will have to be carried to London, to men who would rather not hear it. For the treason has an English end, and it is nearer to him than he can bear to think.
Ship-to-ship action, prize courts and intrigue, monsoon and Southern Ocean seamanship, and the Royal Navy’s wooden world rendered in exacting period detail Treason''s Edge is the eleventh novel of the Nicholas Cruwys Naval Series, and may be read on its own. Age of Sail historical naval fiction in the tradition of Patrick O’Brian and C. S. Forester, for readers of the AubreyMaturin novels and the Hornblower saga: sea adventure grounded in the true history of the Royal Navy, the East India Company, and the French Revolutionary Wars in the Indian Ocean.
