The War of Movement has come to an end with the sudden, unprecedented growth of a trenchline stretching from the Swiss border to the shores of the North Sea. Each side has reacted to the other and neither knows what to do in a war that has suddenly become a mutual siege.
Britain, France, Germany and Austria have all nearly exhausted their stocks of ammunition and are only barely able to continue the war while their factories work every hour to replenish their supplies. Neither governments nor military high commands can comprehend what has happened in the first few months of war.
The Griffin and Redwood families continue to react to the new state of civilisation, themselves hardly able to understand what is happening and what they must do. They are living in a new and alien world and must make their first attempts to respond to it.
