When Autumn Leaves Are Falling

(2025)
(The fourth book in the Cruellest War series)
A novel by

1915 shows an easing of military activities as both sides try to accustom themselves to the new conditions of the Front in Flanders and restructure their economies to meet wartime needs. Neither side has adequate stockpiles of shells and small arms ammunition to continue fighting with the intensity of 1914.

The new air war is in the process of inventing itself. A very few aircraft are flying and taking over the cavalry'''s functions of reconnaissance and one or two are being shot down each week, the numbers of casualties suddenly spiralling upwards as new weapons are taken into the air.

The two militarily active Griffin brothers adapt themselves to the new war, achieving different successes. The Redwood family displays its own successes in alternative fields.

The war is settling into a new pattern of cruelty, readying itself for the butchery to come.
