In 1915, the British Government decided that to try and discourage Turkey from becoming involved in the War, the straits known as the Dardenelles would be forced by the Royal Navy, which would then place itself before Constantinople (present day Istanbul) and so threaten the Ottoman Empire into submission. Lieutenant-commander Edward Courtenay, DSC, RN, takes command of his 'L'class destroyer Leiston at Portsmouth and while his father James, now in command of a Squadron of light cruisers, patrols the western coast of Britain, he and the new Flotilla he is attached to spend time 'working up' together before being despatched to the Mediterranean to take part in the Gallipoli Campaign. James and his Squadron soon follow and they are both in the thick of the action as they play their part in trying to bring the campaign to a satisfactory conclusion....
