In 1794 Britain was at war with Revolutionary France, and the Royal Navy was tasked with blockading French ports. Jack Law is Master's Mate of the Starboard watch on board His Majesty's 36-gun frigate Cleopatra. The ship is supposed to be keeping watch over the French port of LaRochelle as part of the blockade but its Captain is far more interested in the spectacle of a man being flogged senseless and does not notice the change in wind direction, resulting in two French frigates being able to break free of the port. Since the Captain is not one to fight, he elects to run, and this sets in motion a chain of events that takes Jack Law into a number of escapades including a cutting out off the French coast and action in the Mediterranean.
