In the Noth-East coal was king,and there were fortunes to be made by those bold and tough enough to fight for them. Among these the Joicey family had risen in just two generations from humble pitmen working the cramped and dangerous seams of the Longbenton mine, to become the greatest coal-woners in the entire world.
