Set in Tooting in 1951, Evie has two daughters by her married lover, but he abandons her and Evie is left a single mother longing for marriage. When her next lover is killed, Evie finds herself alone again, but a stash of stolen diamonds leads her to a hopeful encounter with a police officer.
